I love woodcock pure and simple
Not because they are tasty or pretty
But for other virtues aplenty
They are amazing for their hippy life style
And courage in flying many miles
They fly all night from way up north
Land in a woods or golf course edge
Probe for worms with long thin beaks
In this they might to you seem geeks
But their virtue is that they come
To where I live with my bird dogs
A wild thing willing to be found and pointed
With body odor most enticing
Our quail are gone
A sadness deep for me and many
But woodcock still survive and travel
Thank you Woody you are my buddy
The woodcock breeds from March to May
Migrates south from September through November
North from January til spring
And some stick around all year by ding
So if you like me are so lucky
As to have woodcock for buddies
Spare them from your blazing gun
Be satisfied to point them only on their visits
With luck they’ll be back next season
To entertain your pups and you
