If You Care Too Much

If you care too much
That the bird falls dead
You’ve missed the point
Of the hunt my friend

It’s not about
What’s in your bag
Or hard shots made
On which you’ll brag

It’s all about
The dog that points
The bird for you

How it hunts
With you in mind
And not instead
For the county line

How you can walk
Silent behind
Never yell
Or search or squall

Never wonder where it’s at
But know you’ll be met atop next hill
And if you winged one you didn’t see fall
It will be in its jaws uncrushed, unmauled
